User Research for a Product Roadmap

Due to confidentiality the details of this project have been generalized.

the goal

A company reached out to DISHER do to user research and host an Innovation Workshop whose outcome would help them develop a product roadmap for the development of future products.

Although they had already done their own research, our client decided to hire DISHER to gain an alternate perspective.

One goal of this project was to specifically dig into edge case scenarios to ensure they were designing a product that worked for all their customers.

the team

The project team consisted of 5-6 DISHER team members acting as researchers, project managers, concept engineers, product development engineers, and industrial designers.

Each led different aspects of this project including benchmarking, research, interviews, leading innovation events, and coordinating with the client.

my role

My role in this project was to develop and write interview questions, summarize and distill each interview into summary slides, pull out key themes, and then finally present the research found to the client at the innovation workshop.

the work

INITIAL RESEARCH & INTERVIEWS

We conducted 11 interviews with users who used the type of product we were researching and fit the clients personas.

Each interview was summarized with key quotes and notable things that that user talked about that pertained to our clients problems and questions.

In addition to the interviews, we conducted benchmarking and industry research.

INNOVATION WORKSHOP AND PROBLEM SOLVING

DISHER’s user interviews and benchmarking research led to key insights which were then used to develop 3 problem statements for an Innovation Event.

DISHER conducted a two-day Innovation Event in our clients space consisting of 22 participants.

Both DISHER and our client brainstormed on each problem statement, developing hundreds of concepts and ideas. The group then voted on the top 5-6 ideas from each problem statement and those top ideas selected were developed into concept playbooks.

Those final 17 concepts were rated for User Desirability, Technology Readiness, and Commercial Viability, along with an assessment of Effort vs. Impact.

FINAL DELIVERY & CLIENT RESPONSE

We delivered all the research and ideas to the client where they will now take it and develop a roadmap for the development of future products.
